Maldon & District Constitutional Club
Estd. 1908. THE Club is Open Normal Hours.
Situated
on
the
corner
of
Fambridge
Road
and
New
Street,
close
to
White
Horse,
Public
Car
Park.
It
is
built on the site of the Town’s original
Midden
!
Our
Club’s
present
home
was
opened
by
The
Right
Honourable
John
Wakeham
MP,
(now
Lord
Wakeham), on the 30
th
June 1984.
Members celebrated the Cub’s Centenary and, a Commemorative Plaque, was unveiled by
The Rt Hon. John Whittingdale OBE MP, (now, The Rt Hon. Sir John Whittingdale OBE MP),
with the Chairman Mrs Ann Freeman, on 31
st
May 2008.

Ladies were allowed into the Club, as visitors, on Saturday evenings only. However they
were allowed in, in 1986, to join as Full Members!
1984 to 2020.
Our Club moves for the third time to the current building.
This,
was
a
direct
result
of
the
first
Female
Prime
Minister,
Margaret
Thatcher;
Baroness
Thatcher
of
Kesteven,
LG,
OM,
DStJ,
PC,
FRS,
Hon.
FRSC.
On
a
visit
during
her
term
of
office
as
PM,
she
walked,
(unplanned),
into
the
local
Constitutional
Club,
which
was
men
only
at
that
time.
Nobody
who
was
there,
asked
her
to
leave!
As
a
result,
the
Constitution
had
to
be
changed
and,
later
Legislation.
This
act,
is
a
contributory
factor,
in
her
portrait,
still hanging prominently in the Clubhouse to this day.
A Midden is a dump for domestic waste,
which may consist of animal bone, human
excrement, botanical material, mollusk
shells, sherds, and other artefacts associated
with human occupation.
